Newport Lodge #104

House Rules

A few ground rules that keep the Member’s Lounge welcoming for every member and guest.

As of January 23, 2025. Set by the House Committee.

Heads Up

The Member’s Lounge is closed during Lodge Meetings — the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:00 PM — and during official Elks ceremonies. No food or drinks served, even for members. Only initiated members may be in the building at these times, so members planning to bring a friend or family member should plan that visit for any other day.

  1. All members, both Newport and visiting, should always be in possession of their membership cards, and present them to the bartender for service.
  2. The door to the Member’s Lounge will be locked while the Lounge is open. Membership cards are to be used for entry.
  3. Visiting Elks members will ring the buzzer for entry. If a Newport member lets them in, s/he must ask for their membership card for entry.
  4. All members, both Newport and visitors, must sign all guests in as soon as they enter the Member’s Lounge, and must stay with them. Non-Elks cannot purchase drinks. The host member must order their guest's drinks. Members are responsible for their guests' behavior.
  5. The opening and closing times of the Member’s Lounge will be determined by the House Committee. It is the bartender's decision when to close after the assigned earliest time.
  6. Complaints made against any member, guest, or bartender must be made in writing, signed, and submitted to the Lounge Manager, who will give it to the House Committee for consideration.
  7. Complaints and suggestions can be placed in the lounge mailbox to the left of the foyer door and will be honored only if signed.
  8. Any tickets or merchandise sold in the Member’s Lounge shall be approved by the House Committee.
  9. The only animals allowed on Lodge property — in the Member’s Lounge or on the Member’s Porch — are "service" animals as defined by Rhode Island state law.
  10. Only authorised individuals are allowed behind the bar or in the Ice Room.
  11. No open alcoholic beverages may be taken off the Lodge property, and no alcoholic beverages may be brought onto the Lodge property by any member or guest.
  12. The Member’s Lounge is closed during Lodge Meetings (2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:00 PM) and during official Elks ceremonies. Only initiated members may be in the building at these times; guests are not permitted.
  13. No unruly conduct, profane language, arguments, or derogatory remarks shall be permitted in the Member’s Lounge. This type of behavior constitutes "Conduct Unbecoming of an Elk" and may result in the member facing disciplinary action by the House Committee.
  14. Checks will no longer be accepted for payment. Credit cards are accepted, and an ATM machine is available in the Lodge foyer.
  15. Individuals under the age of 21 are not allowed in the Member’s Lounge after 8:00 PM. At no time shall anyone under the age of 21 sit or stand at the bar.
  16. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas outside.
  17. Under the jurisdiction of the House Committee, the bartender is always in charge of the Member’s Lounge. The bartender may refuse to serve anyone for just cause and may also require that any member or guest leave the premises for inappropriate conduct. If a member or guest does not leave when asked, the police may be called to escort the person off the property.
  18. Cable news is not allowed to be watched in the Member’s Lounge. Political and religious conversations are not allowed in the Member’s Lounge.
  19. All posters or announcements posted in the Member’s Lounge must be authorised by the House Committee or Exalted Ruler.
  20. No food is to be brought in during times the kitchen is open.

Questions or concerns? Submit them in writing — signed — to the Lounge Manager, or drop a note in the lounge mailbox left of the foyer door. The House Committee reviews everything received.
